Tilstanden rammer særlig menn mellom 40 og 60 år, og den oppstår som regel i forbindelse med fysisk aktivitet.

Fotball, håndball og tennis eller squash er eksempler på idretter hvor avrivning av akillessenen ikke er sjelden.
